Mt. Rainier is active, and the volcanoes along the Cascades Volcano Arc (for example Mt. Saint Helens and Mt. Baker) will continue to be active as long the Juan de Fuca plate is being subducted under the North American plate. Volcanic Arcs and Volcanic Island Arcs occur at convergent plate boundaries, some examples of this are the Volcanic Arc of in the Andes, or the Volcanic Island Arc that makes up the island of Japan.

It's active and appears to be...just waiting for the right time, or more correctly for the citizens of Seattle/Tacoma, the very wrong time.
It doesn't have to erupt to do an awful lot of damage. It could heat up and cause a mud flow that could inundate Tacoma and everything up to and including Seattle.
On a clear day, people on the ferry from Bainbridge Island to Seattle can get a really good look of Rainier.
They are fond of saying..."The Mountain is out:"!
The area is one of the most beautiful areas in our country.
