good answer but I beg to differ on the not screwed up thing, something has to be terribly wrong for a person to inflict pain upon themselves this way...and ya know what I have had a hard life too with a lot of pain but I am not cutting myself...

My issues GT is that hurting yourself, no matter how bad your hurting is wrong plain and simple. I have plenty of basis for this, I am a mother of young children who will be teenagers. I have a nephew who is in fact a teenager and the problems are rampant. I will not sit back and baby a child who is old enough to know that cutting themselves is wrong, you may think me mean for doing that but there it is.

Never ever in this statement did I mention anything about emo...now you may have your pet peeves and I applaud you for your dedication and respect your beliefs BUT most of what you have put was not pertaining to anything I wrote, some yes. There IS a mental problem with this behavior there is NO getting around that

I'm gonna keep this one short ans sweet....I've done it as an adult, severed 3 tendons in my hand....why??? to keep myself from hurting someone else that deserved to be hurt but mainly.... to take my mind from the agony it was feeling, physical pain is NOTHING compared to a tortured soul.... that pain helped to relieve what was in my mind..
Now look at teens...no fear, except for....their stature in the group, the fear of being shunned by others, risking looking stupid, messing up with their first date....any of these mistakes can haunt them for the rest of school... now if you have no physical fear, are scared shitless of being tormented inside, and something goes wrong????? e=mc2.
I'm not saying what they do is right or wrong...I'm not a judge or jury....but I do understand some of where they are coming from.
Sorry that wasn't short and sweet but I hope it helps you understand

ok, this is one of my biggest pet peeves. go ahead and give me all the thumbs down you want! i don't care! i'm going to tell you my opinion!
Don't talk about something you have NO clue about! Way too many people believe stereotypes! Do your research and stop believing the crap that people tell you!
If you do your research you will learn it has nothing to do with attention seeking. yes, some people do. but, the majority of cutters don't! It's very much something that the individual either keeps to themselves or only tell a FEW close friends. They HIDE their cuts and scars! NOT ATTENTION seeking!
Ok, another stereotype is that all EMO kids cut. Emo ONLY refers to a genre of music and fashion style! NOT cutting. A wide variety of people have ways to deal. Yes, that's right. Even jocks, cheerleaders, preps, etc. We all have different ways to deal.
"What in the world are you thinking while doing that???" & are "the kids these days really that screwed up in the head?"- i just want to make note that these are attacking words. like i said above, don't make judgments when you have no clue what it is like and you clearly haven't done your research because you would know why!
as for your first question, people cut for a lot of different reason. they start because they either know of someone who does or heard of someone who does. yes, there's obviously something wrong. but, there's always a REASON behind it! many people start because they feel numb and empty inside. sometimes it's better to feel something rather than nothing. even if it's pain. others do it because they are overwhelmed with emotions and don't know how to cope with it in a positive way. many of these people come from homes where they were basically told "stuck it up". they weren't encourage to express their emotion. it does become an addiction. you do it once and it feels good. then the next thing you know you can't help yourself. you know that it will give you immediate satisfaction.
this has been a problem for a long time before "emo" was even a term! it just hasn't been publicized as much. people like you take away the seriousness of this problem. your so willing to say how "sick" it is and look down at us when you clearly too set in your ways to even open your eyes! before you talk a bunch of sh*t about this at least do your research. you only make yourself look bad. i guess you are not alone given the number of people who don't know anything on this topic and yet make judgments. but, it doesn't make it right!

Ok the problem is that when a person gets to that low point they are searching for something to make themselves feel better. Unfortunately they go to the wrong person, place, or environment to get the worst advice possible. When someone tells them "Hey just cut yourself a little it feels much better after a while" Well that is the only advice they heard and now they are making themselves believe that is true. They also hide it so well that no one knows about it until it is to late.

maybe some of them DO have a reason being depressed. and remember that depression is something percieved very much on the interior, with sometimes no, or rather intriguing signs to the one around them. but there are, indeed a lot of kids who act as copycats, or who just try to impress others. But no matter what they do, and no matter how stupid their actions seem, you must not judge them (they would only get more turned against you), but try to get them educated, to help them solve their problems, if they have to, or to educate themselves into the idea that they should be strong and independent, without the need of such attention.
however i wouldn't 'pose' as a depressed person, as many goth kids seem to do. but that doesn't mean i know what is really in their minds, do i?

My parents were @ssholes. I was a cutter as a teen. I never saw anyone do it--no one told me about it, I thought I was original. Nothing screams out for attention more than a big old cut. I've had some scars surgicaly removed--I regret doing it. What the heII do you tell your kids? Sorry honey, mommy was messed up in the head as a teen, but don't YOU do it!!

people who do that are extremely mentally impaired. a psychological condition must exist where rational thought cannot be differentiated between unhealthy irrational urges such as self inflicted injury. the delusion of a masochistic release being more fullfilling than a healthier more sensical way of reasoning is definitely a huge red light in a persons psyche.
if a minor child has been found to be 'cutting' themselves, i believe a mandatory psychological evaluation and counseling must be emplored.

What these kids need is love and understanding, not criticism and judgement. Granted, we've all gone through tough times, and cutting yourself is not the answer .. but these kids have not been taught coping skills. Plainly put, children live what they learn .... so, if they're not taught how to cope with life's hurtles, how to love and be loved, you can't expect them to know how to do it. Unfortunately, all most of us can do is show them how to love others, but more importantly, love themselves ... and hope they find their way in life. :)

Actually cutting releases endorphins(like things that make you feel happier) so when yo cut yourself it feels good. If someone cuts theirself than it's their problem, and you shouldn't bother. And if someone flashes with it's not real and the person is just an atention seeker. Or they're just showing the world how they feel. It's individual really.

I feel it may have to do with being pressured at school or being bullied.
Plus I cant see why (apart from the above) kids would do this. I mean they had bloody more than I did as a kid. in my day we had Commordore 64 computers, no internet, no help with homework,
Kids today are spoilt spoilt spoilt

Yeh,
Im not usually stereotypical but it's all the goths who think they are cool! No one normal our age does that
Goths really annoy me, As A group , Not individuals, becasue I do know some nice ones, They go on about how they are different, and if we dont classify them as normal people they take full Huffs and go listen to hawthorne heights in their bedroom and slice themselves, ,, They think their lives are so bad and everyone hates them blah blah blah, There are peopel so much worse off in the world ! Yet they choose to be depressed! Looosers
