I've heard of different meanings, but does it have to do with the Berlin Wall and the second World War?

World War II heavily influenced lead singer/songwriter Roger Waters. The war clearly had an impact and found its way into the lyrics of many songs, not just on this album but on all of the albums that the band did before Waters departed for a solo career in the early 80s. However, The Wall had other influences, such as the onset of paranoia/dementia and the worsening state of one-time band member and Waters' good mate, Syd Barret, who by the time The Wall was released had virtually disappeared into his own world. This breakdown of the human psyche was a key reference point that The Wall returns to over and over again. Personally I think The Wall is about many things - the stresses of going through the stages of life, the expectations of fame and what it does to the individual, the battering of the psyche by a million small nuisances, the futility of war and the scars it leaves behind.. there wasn't one central message but many. VH1 does good commentary pieces from time to time, but also try renting the movie (same title) to put visual interpretations to the music, and see for yourself what The Wall was really all about.

I'm sure it has nothing to do with the Berlin wall or WWII. I think it has to do with a mans slide into insanity. There is also a movie.

Roger Waters himself will tell you that it was his thoughts about his father who was killed at Anzio. He explored his own feelings about war in general.
