Sounds like possibly some sort of moth or butterfly larva or maybe a millipede.

My guess is that it was some species of millipede.

The reason I do not say caterpillar is people know what those are when they see them, they might not know exactly what species but it is clear that it is a caterpillar. You also find centipedes in many homes but the same goes for those as well. Their legs stick out much further along with their antenna so hardly anyone (from seeing legs and antenna) would think it was a worm.

With millipedes though there are many species whose legs are either extremely short and close to the body or fully under the body giving it more the appearance of a worm.

Below is an example...

If they could get a photo next time it would help a ton.

EDIT:
You sent the message that it has no legs along with the fact that your grandfather thinks it is a slug. There is such thing as a black slug but it is found only in select areas. If you want look up black slug on the web and you will see if it falls into the range that your grandparents live. Even if it is not a black slug there are other species that are dark in color and are much more common.
