Unless you involve yourself in the time consuming task of conditioning your Bettas for breeding (keeping them within view of the other, keeping their tanks very clean, and feeding them meaty foods, and finally, putting them in the same tank for about an hour, you will end up with one dead Betta. If not properly conditioned, one will likely go after the other. If you want two Bettas, the best thing to do would be to keep them in a divided tank and use live or fake plants to "hide" them from each other to prevent constant, stressful flaring.

The mal ewill kill the female... even if they mate first, really depends on the size of the tank and if they are showing breeding signs... increased coloring, or nice nest built

A male and female should not fight. The male may start to build a nest (it looks like a lot of bubbles on surface of water). If they start to mate they may look like they're fighting but won't really hurt each other. When the female is secreting pheromones the male will "bite" at the female. It looks like swimming up to the female and bumping her. Also nothing may happen.

It depends on the fish, they might do any of those. Never can tell about those sly little bettas!
