Banks, post offices and other government faculties close on Independence Day, aka Fourth of July [July 4th], but shops and businesses are as usual. They usually would have big sales around July 4th. Workers and students get the day off, unless you're one of the few unlucky ones who had to work at a department store or a business where they would open on this day [like a home center, for example] or where they open 24/7 like someone said of working at "McDonald's".

Not usually. In fact, most shops see Independence Day as an excuse to have a huge sale.

I think Danichole meant to say that banks DO close. Some places close earlier. Mc Donald's stays open because that is a VERY busy night for them, especially after the fireworks displays...if they are the ones that are open 24 hours.

It is a federal holiday, so the US Postal Service, banks, the stock market, government, are closed.
A lot of other businesses, however, are open (such as the grocery store, restaurants, departments stores, etc).
