Hate is easy. It requires no thought, no hesitation, no examination of conscience ...and it's so very easy to teach.
And it's so very effective as a weapon.
Buddha said, "Hate can never conquer Hate. Only Love can conquer Hate. That is the ancient and unchangeable law." And that takes more courage and strength than many people have within them. Poor dumb bastards.
Sorry you had to go through that experience, and THANKS for helping your friend.

i won't be able to imagine the position you stay! I absolutely have continuously lived in large cities of the northeast or the west coast. I absolutely ought to stay next to an ocean. In SF there have been some beatings contained in the 70's, even a buddy of mine changed into the sufferer of one such attack, yet extremely, considering that factor I absolutely have considered purely growing to be attractiveness and tolerance contained in the kinds of places I stay. The small city I stay in now must be carefully threat-free and properly integrated. Gays and lesbians right here have made this style of tremendous contribution to the city's total economy that we are very a lot component to economic and social existence right here. i think that right here and in another cities, gays are literally not basically tolerated yet valued. The community I stay in has been completely switched over for the added positive through larger middle type gays contained in the most suitable few years.

I can't imagine where you live! I have always lived in big cities of the northeast or the west coast. I have to live next to an ocean. In SF there were some beatings in the 70's, even a friend of mine was the victim of one such attack, but really, since that time I have seen only growing acceptance and tolerance in the kinds of places I live. The small city I live in now is completely safe and well integrated. Gays and lesbians here have made such a HUGE contribution to the city's total economy that we are very much a part of economic and social life here. I feel that here and in some other cities, gays are not just tolerated but valued. The neighborhood I live in has been totally transformed for the better by upper middle class gays in the last few years.

I would posit another, deep psychology reason, for this sort of atrocious behavior. Some mistake it for homophobia, but it is more a form of repressed fear of self disguised as other-centered violence. Think about grade school kids and the boys who hit girls they like. At that age, boys don't have a way to express tender feelings so they get sublimated into approved forms of expression. This also happens among 'straight' men in locker rooms and among sportsmen.
While I certainly don't condone violence or taunting toward anyone, having been the object of both I know whereof I speak, I think sometimes there are reason other than intolerance that explain these behaviors.

I'm sorry about what happened to your friend. There are alot of ignorant people in the world today. To be honest his sexuality really shouldn't be any of their business nor is it their problem. Just stay away from the narrow minded nut jobs.
Carrie, one of your kids hitting the other and being gay are two totally different things. For one being gay is involuntary. One of the children choose to hit the other. So it's not like they couldn't help themselves. And two just because you believe God says it's wrong doesn't mean people should shun gay people. Especially when not everyone believes in God.

Do something about it. There are plenty of groups who need people. I don't know where you are, but just google "equality" or "gay rights" along with your state and see what you find. also, SAY SOMETHING! when you hear or see discrimination taking place, voice your opinion!
My Group:
EQUALITY COALITION OF NORTH CAROLINA MISSION STATEMENT
We hear the civil rights movement consistently spoken about and referred to in the past tense, like the struggle is over. The general misconception that has unfortunately been adopted by many is that the fight against discrimination, in all of its forms, is over. But this is not true. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, in 2006 there were 33 different hate oriented groups in North Carolina alone, and a few more that haven’t been listed yet. Many of us experience or witness racism and discrimination in our everyday lives, even if we do not notice the subtle way it is presented. The KKK and National Socialist Movement (the American Nazi Party) ARE here in our state, along with others, active in our communities. This is why the Equality Coalition of North Carolina was created. We stand by 5 main points;
1. We are against Racism, Religious Discrimination, Sexism, and Homophobia
2. We need to stand up and fight all hate groups, and not allow them to gain any more ground then they already have in our state.
3. We must confront and combat the more subtle discrimination we find in our daily lives.
4. It is our job to educate, strengthen, and promote tolerance and acceptance in our state.
5. Promote non-violence in confronting and fighting hate, except in situations of self defense.
It is our policy that to participate in this organization you must be over the age of 18 for safety reasons. That being said, it is still true that ALL of us can play a part, and it is up to everyone to fight to make this world a better place.

They Just are. That's why I keep saying We really have to be out there, to unite in the Gay and Lesbian community and make our voice heard. We need to educate people on our lifestyle, and get past the old stereotypes. Make them see all the things we have in common, instead of the differences between us.

He got beat up AGAIN?! He needs to carry some type of protection with him if he can't defend himself with his fists. A lot of people are just ignorant and prejudice. I'm glad you stood up for your friend, but there's no excuse for what they did to your friend. If he's able to, he needs to identify the guys who did this to him, and press charges against them. Your friend is not a bad person just because he's gay. Those guys are idiots and they are gonna pay for what they did to him someday.
