Are you ABSOLUTELY sure of the connections? I don't know how many times I've heard people say that then found that the connections were at fault. Connections and battery posts build up oxide, under normal use, which causes a high resistance. The oxide is black and usually no corrosion will be seen. Either wire brush or use a knife blade to scrape both connectors and battery posts until they're bright and shiny. Also make sure you have the battery tested 'under load' by the auto parts store. Checking for 13 volts with a DVM doesn't prove the battery is good. It needs to be checked with a full load on it.

From your question, my first thought would be the battery terminals. This can cause this kind of power loss. If this doesn't work, you may have a blown fusible link. These are in-line fuses built into the wiring harness. You have one or more fusible links located in the wiring bundle that connects to your starter. Like a fuse, replace a fusible link with one with the same amperage rating as the original one. These are inexpensive items. You splice them in place of the original ones. Solder you connections. Use shrink wrap to waterproof your connections.

Have you checked the ignition module? Does the 86 model even have an ignition module? I'm guessin on this one.

I know my x 91 Lumina did the same thing to me once. It turned out to be the ignition module after 350. bucks(total parts and labor later).

Good luck!
