Anything that the 4 month old can hold in their hands that makes noise. I am not talking about things that move and make noise. More like rattles and things that are bright in colour, soft and easy to grasp. Check this website for some Ideas. http://www.ape2zebra.com/all-newborn-gifts.asp

What are dipers?

There are many developmentally appropriate toys for a four-month-old, and any department store will have them sectioned off (think Target). Activity mats are great, as are portable mobiles (the Velcro kind that hang on carriers). My two-month-old already loves hers. Keepsakes are a great gift, too. Maybe an engraved piggy bank ...?

Gift cards are also good. Or you can check to see if any items are left over from the parents' registry; most stores keep the registry active for 6-12 months.

You can also plan ahead a few months, so the parents have toys to pull out when the baby is ready.

I am sure if you go to Babies R Us or Toys R Us they will have an entire isle devoted to baby toys. If the baby will be 4 months at Christmas then get something he/she will be able to use in the future. I always loved the boxes where you had to fit in different shapes such as round and square shapes. I am sure Fisher Price makes this but there is so much more now in the way of educational toys. Good luck and have fun.

Books are a good idea. You can read to your baby now and it will help his/her vocabulary later and books never go out of style. Also, some kind of toy where the baby is encouraged to be on his/her belly are supposed to be good for them. Mirrors are great for little ones also because all babies love to look at themselves. Any toy with textures are good too, things that are bumpy or make a krinkle sound or squeaks when squeezed.

Very simple toys. There are really cute rattles that light up and play songs and have different areas with different kinds of material which babies love to feel. A nice teething ring with come in handy too. A plush stuffed animal can be fun too.

the ocean wonders toys are good. Anything with lights, bright colors or music. Tummy time mats are good, so are the toy gyms....the ones where you lay the baby on his back and he can look up at the toys, and try to reach for them. My daughter had a fisher-price one that made music when she grabbed for the toys that were hanging down.

A baby gym with lights and music is a hit at that age. Actually, anything with lights and music. :)

For bigger gifts, jumpers (like the Rainforest Jumperoo) or an exersaucer would be great.

For smaller gifts, board books, teething blankets, and teething rings and rattles are good gifts at that age.

Go to Lakeshore store, they have great learning games for all ages. No noise toys though unless it will help them learn because it might just make you crazy. Babies are content with plastic tupperware bowls with bright colored safe objects. Noise :)
