The reason it doesn't slow down your computer is pretty obvious, protection is not migrated into your system with multiple processes of heavy protection and security suites are pretty much more limited protection of all areas than the company's software itself. Now Comodo PRO actually passes 98% of leaks for free compared to any other firewall..

To hide your IP address,, don't just use a proxy server, use Hide My IP or anaymozier, as they cover your tracks froms scums/scams/hackers...and basic port scanners. It also used to bypass websites. Or you can tell your ISP to change your IP. However despite of all changes, it will not cover your IP totally, due to the fact, if you didn't comminucate, you can't connect/download/surf..Stealthing IPs means no one know's you exist, using a IP proxy/Hide IP proxy means that there is the middleman, you are the computer, the dude is the Host/Server, the middleman does the work for you, while you get the info. (Means, loading pages..surfin)

Yes, i agree using a router, hides yourself from the rest of the world, because you are using a secured network, and not a public computer that connects straight to the internet.
Basically, the router is the wall, the firewall is the additional titanium layer that monitors and blocks everything that is unautorized. So that wall, will protect you, a stealth firewall, will be like glass, while the wall is there, and you are behind it.

will it further protect me?
Yes it will protect you greatly, be aware that people can still know your IP using various techniques, but basic scanners like Wikipedia's (if you edit) will not detect it.
is it a necessity?
No it isn't. In fact it slows surfing quite a bit.

You can't "hide" your IP address. Its akin to trying to "hide" you house. But you lock the doors at night, right?

A good firewall program does wonders. AVG Internet Security is a good all around Antivirus/Antispyware/Antispam/Firewall software. It doesn't slow down a computer like Norton or Mcafee.

Get it at:

You can "disguise" your public IP address by setting up what is known as a proxy. There are free proxy services on the internet, seek and ye shall find. If you have a high speed connection, placeing a router between your computer and the ISP's modem will NAT your computer so that it is "hidden" in a way from the rest of the world.

The reason for doing this is making it harder for would be hackers and virus's/spyware to get to your PC. Not make it impossible mind you, just harder. It also makes web pages that track visitors by IP address not be able to "track" your activity as easily.

Hope this helps
