Headers replace stock exhaust manifolds, Instead of having a common area right off the head where the exhaust goes into, each individual cylinder has a tube going from the head (usually down) to a collector where you would mount a muffler to the end of the header, allows the engine to get rid of exhaust gas so the fresh air/fuel mixture coming in is not obstructed.
