The Time Zone changes at the Chatahoochee River which forms the border between Georgia and Alabama. The river continues South through the Florida panhandle. So the far Western part of the Florida panhandle, including Panama City and Pensacola are on Central Time, same as Texas. The rest of Florida is one hour ahead on Eastern Time. There is also a time change in far West Texas just before you get to El Paso. El Paso is on Mountain Time. So it is actually possible to have a time difference of anywhere between zero and two hours depending on which part of each state you are in.

If they had changed those rules in Ohio, Texas, and Florida before 2000 Bush would not be President, today. Assuming that California is a reliably Democratic state is absurd. California has a Republican governor. Two Republican Presidents were from California (Reagan and Nixon) and California went for both of them.
