the writers are paid a disgustingly low wage for their work, they are the base of creativity for the movies and television we watch, but are not paid nearly what they deserve. While actors, directors, and producers rake in the bucks by using the very material that the writers put out. I think it's great that they are doing this and sticking together with their union. This will help anyone who aspires to become a writer for television and movies. The production companies make a lot of money, there is no reason not to pay money where it is due.

Although I agree with the sentiment of the above answers that writers and other non-acting production staff are underpaid, much less not receiving a cent from things like online and DVD sales, I'd like to point out that, IMHO, there hasn't been a decent film since 1981's "Chariots of Fire" and "On Golden Pond", so, none of them are worth a penny (remember, if there's nothing but junk on the market, then the Oscars are a celebration of that junk; being the "best of junk" is a dubious honor, indeed).
Besides, if you are paid a base salary to do a set piece of work (as most of us are), you should be entitled to a cost of living increase, but not a "piece of the pie", vis-a-vis royalties. Should a fast-food cook get a percentage of all the burgers he or she flips (i.e., are sold)? Should an accountant get a percentage of the money he saves his/her clients?
Besides, if they did get a "piece of the action", so to speak, the cost of movies and videos would go up, proportionately, if not dramatically, and they aren't even worth the current costs! Selling DVD's which cost approximately 25 cents each for over $10 each, is comparable to sodas being made for 5 cents and being sold for well over 10 times that amount.
