Wiping the hard drive and starting over should have been an option of the system restore disks. Its possible, though unlikely, that those disks don't have the necessary drivers for your sound card and network card. You might have to download the printer drivers from the printer manufacturer's web site and install them, but you can do that after you get your machine running properly.

Instead of installing windows from the windows desktop which intalls a 2nd copy of windows. Put in the restore disk and reboot. That will put a fresh single copy of windows on it. Connect it to the router by the ethernet cable before installing windows so you can go online and get updates and drivers. You will have to configure your wireless afterwards. You can get a audio driver from the Dell website if the fresh install doesnt load it. You will need to reinstall your printer afterwards also. If you dont have the cd anymore you can get the driver and application from the printer manufacturers website

I had an older dell. The system created restore points or I could choose my on points. A section for restore allowed me to choose how far back I wanted to go to a point of stable operation. No disk was needed.

When you got your computer it came with its own settings just for your computer. By using somebody else restore disk it put there settings that they had on there computer onto your computer. (Their default settings) So that is why that happened and your printer and things are gone. To completly restore it to what you want it to be your gonna have to get a diffrent restore disk try to get one of these new windows restore disks. Some completly restores your computer and some just repair what was broken and that is what happend to you. So i suggest go to your local store and buy a restore disk ^_^

I have the same computer and I actually had to replace the hard drive. Try calling Dell Tech support, it costs about $40 but it's worth it when your computer starts working again!

First check if the computer fan(s) is stuck and not spinning. It might be clogged with dust. This would cause the computer to overheat, and overheating reduces performance. So, before you try to do something as complicated as reinstalling your OS, check simpler things.
