total alkalinity = [HCO3^-](bicarbonate anion)+2[CO3^2-](carbonate anion)+[OH-](hydroxide anion)-[H+](hydronium cation)

A confusing way of saying net removers of H+. So each HCO3- can remove 1 H+, and each CO32- can remove two.
