2 x 2 x 2 x 3 = 24

an easy way to approach this problem is to see that 24 is an even #, so divide by 2 on your calculator, you get 12; divide by 2 again, and you get 6; divide by 2 again, and you get 3.

2 and 3 are only divisible by themselves and 1, so that makes them prime factors

The prime factors of 24 are
2(3) and 3

24 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 3, and those numbers are primes

actually, you start off thinking with the first prime number which is 2, and 24 can be divided by 2, so you divide by 2, which you will get 12.

then start off again thinking the smallest prime which is 2, and 12 can be divided by 2, so you get 6 now.

repeat. and divide 6 with the smallest prime (2), you get 3. and 3 is a prime too.

so... 24 as a product of prime factors will be 2X2X2X3

24 = 8 x 3
8 = 2 x 2 x2

Two and three are prime numbers, so the product of prime numbers is 2 x 2 x2 x3 or 2^3 x 3

Okay, you draw a factor tree.

You have the number at the top of the tree.

24

And then you write the numbers that divide into it, underneath

24
6___________4

Then you write the numbers which divide into them underneath them

24
6 ----------------------4
-2- -3-________-2- -2-
The numbers I have put dashes next to are your prime factors. They are prime factors, because nothing else divides into them.
So 24= 2x2x2x3 (Check it on a calculator if you really want to)

Hope that helped

divide by first prime number (2)

24 / 2 = 12 ( you can divide by 2 again)

12 / 2 = 6 ( you can divide by 2 again)

6 / 2 = 3 ( you can't divide by 2 but you can divide by 3)

3 /3 = 1

so your answer is

2 x 2 x 2 x 3 = 24 or 2^3 x 3 =24
