The age have a lot to do, but also the work problems and also a bad relationship with his wife, sometimes a husband can feel trap in a relation where his wife doesn't understand him, so everything can work against the humor, lack of sleep also is a factor.

My honest answer is that not ALL old men are grumpy, and not all old women nag! LOL! I have known some older couples who are very happy together.
In some cases though, you have to wonder if it's in part due to TOO much familiarity...and getting stuck in a rut where you live in such an every day grind...always the same thing, every day...over and over, AND the fact that so many elderly people are trying to live on a fixed income that isn't adequate. Financial problems are the downfall of MANY marriages. When every day is a struggle with money, and health problems...it's bound to bring out the worst in folks.

As a 32 year old man myself, I have been married twice and divorced twice. I am currently in a relationship of 6 years, and it is the best I have ever been in.
What I have learned:
Be upfront and completely honest at all times.
Expect your partner to be the same way, and when she is, don't get upset , remember you ask her to be honest.
If you feel any issues slowly raising your blood pressure. Don't let it get to the boiling point. Set aside a time where the two of you can sit down , and talk like adults about your issues. Let only one person talk at a time, and actually listen to her needs. She in turn should listen to your needs.
Don't be jealous !!
If you don't feel that you can trust your mate... she shouldn't be your mate.
That goes both ways ... Don't Cheat !!
This is not only because you love your mate, it actually will help you feel more secure in your relationship.
"If I can fight the urge , she can too"
Always trust.
Also, To many men try to control their spouse...
A woman is a person too... Just like you, they think, feel , have a dad, and mom.... No matter what you do , trying to control there actions will only result in harm.
Tell a perspective girlfriend about your lifestyle, what your like and dislikes are, and listen to hers.
If you don't like what you here, don't date her... Its that simple.
Life is to short to live in a constant battle... Pick a partner you can work with, not against.

It is the man himself that makes him grumpy.
A person makes their own decisions in life including that of attitude. To blame old age or a nagging wife is only to push ones weakness off on someone or something else and to not deal with situations in life that are uncomfortable.

what makes a man grumpy???
--the sun rising
--not getting enough sex
--his football team losing a game
--being nagged
--being forced to help around the house
What makes a woman grumpy?
--Her husband being a "minute man"
--Having to do EVERYTHING around the house while her husband refuses to help
--Her husband not listening to her....if he'd do that, there would be no need to nag.
