There are those who suggest that the creation of a complete lipid bilayer like modern cells may be a bit much to expect for the first of lifeforms. Such individuals want to find things instead that have similar properties but which ideally can self-assemble from completely abiotic components. Microspheres and coaservates are two examples that have been found: microspheres are globs of protein-like molecules that adhere because of their hydrophobic properties and a coaservate might be called a lipid mono-layer.

Whether early life needed to go through these steps or not and whether these particular examples might have been such stepping stones is a MUCH more protracted discussion, however.

Microspheres in particular, though, are considered by many biologists to be a form of life, if not a completely self-sustaining one or the one historically involved in our origin. Links below are to a series of articles that attempt to establish exactly that, and includes a number of other links besides.

Hope that helps!
