Quite a few of the stories are parables written to teach a lesson (like the Prodigal Son). Think of it as an early text about forgiveness and it never being too late to go home.
Others attempt to explain things in the context of the day they were written.
Others are pure history (like the story of Esther).
The Bible was the most copied and most protected book of all time. As time went on, the most important events were recorded in it so they would not be forgotten. If it wasn't considered a "closed" book now, there would be additional chapters on the holocaust and the atomic bomb and other important events.
By labelling the book as the Word of God, Biblical writers ensured the book would be protected.

People who believe in holy books believe that even though human beings did the writing, those humans were acting under the guidance of divine inspiration. In other words, the human is like the pen or the word processor - the agent through which the work is done -- while God is the actual author.

The sacred writings have survived all these years because within the "man made" stories lies the Truth - the truth about who we are in relationship to the Universe or God. The interpretations are many, which speaks to our free will. There is no one interpretation of any of these stories because each of us sees and hears them differently according to where we are in our personal spiritual journeys at the time. However, there is only one Truth from which these expressions emerged. That Truth is God.
Of course, there are many people who still want to allow others to decide for them what their relationship with God is. That is the reason so many groups are desperate to "prove" that their interpretation is the only right one. That desperation comes from fear. Fortunately, we all have the privilege of reading the "holy books" or sacred writings and deciding for ourselves the value that we are able at that moment to accept for ourselves. No one, no religion can impose their interpretations on you unless you choose to accept them.
So, the reason we believe in man made stories written in all the Holy books is because we don't all believe the same things about those stories. That's the beauty of the message. That's why Jesus used parables to teach. You can only see what you're prepared to see, and it is unique to you.

Ah, but your question begs the question. Many do not believe that the "stories in all the Holy Books" ARE "man-made." They believe instead that the stories, whether in the Bible, the Quran, etc. were "inspired by God."
So, the people who do believe in those stories would not agree with your belief that those stories are "man-made."

In the olden days there were not that many literate people those that were, were usually noblemen or clergy. The written word was a 'magical thing' to most and when the priest read from the Gospel it was deemed the word of God and therefore not to be disputed.Hence the expression 'That's the gospel truth'.

Well, I don't believe them. But people who DO believe them don't think they're manmande, they think they were written by God. I think they find it comforting, and besides, when you've been told something your entire life, it's hard to stop.

Look at it this way....
What is the penalty for not believing in the lord if there isn't one?
It is better to believe and have a chance,
than not to believe and suffer for it..
