I got hit hard in football right in the rib, its not broken. But, it hurts really bad taking deep breaths. Trainer says "You just got the wind knocked out of you". I got the wind knocked out me before and its diffrent. What kind of injury could it be? (played yesterday still killing me)

it is possible you have fractured a rib, but it just as well may be a bad bruise of the ribs. talk to your parents and seeing a doctor. icing the area can help, as well as taking ibuprofen (if your parents say it is alright). it may take a few days to a week or so to feel better

You cannot absolutely rule out a fractured rib without an x-ray. (Even then, it may not be apparent initially.)

I do not disagree with your trainer's philosophy of waiting 24 -48 hours after certain types of injuries before getting an x-ray, but if you are still having severe pain, it's time.

Also,I wouldn't return to play or practice until released by your doctor.

Trainer may be wrong. Sounds like a broken rib. Go to your Dr.
