I read the book and I'm having trouble figuring out the theme.

Here are some possibilities:

"There is a bit of the "child as a burden" theme going here that Catherine's acceptance of her brother at the end cannot really overcome. And while there are many other issues being portrayed here (parental neglect, etc), it is clear that autism is the major dramatic obstacle to overcome."

"This is not only a great read, with a nice rhythm and easy style, but it is an important book that siblings of kids with special needs need to read. The theme that different is simply different, not bad, is vital for kids to understand. The fact that it is done with a sense of humor and that uniqueness can be laughed at and accepted makes this book far more than a didactic text on acceptance."

"Rules is chock full of themes: family, friends, disabilities, acceptance. Rules would be a great book for a school book club or an English class. It’s a fun, quick read with great characters. But it also lends itself to great discussion!"

The theme of the book "Rules" is no matter what someone looks like even though they may not look like you for you to treat the person like there's nothing wrong with them.
