Going by historical standards, I probably would look after it when you gave it to me, but as soon as you'd gone, I'd give it to a zoo or something.

I think the idea of giving a white elephant (where the phrase White Elephant of the White Elephant Stall at a carboot sale or whatever comes from) is that in olden times, it was thought that white elephants were sacred, and therefore, they could not be put to work like "usual" elephants could.

As a result, keeping a White Elephant was more trouble than it was worth as you had to look after it, and yet could not get any financial gain from it.

So if you were rich and didn't like someone, you'd give them a White Elephant to make them waste money without it looking like that.

So no, as cruel as it sounds, I'd ditch it asap. Historically, hypothetically and financially speaking of course. :)
