absolutely buy a new hard drive. Not only are today's hard drives much larger, much faster, and much cheaper, but your old hard drive will most likely fail very quickly.
MTBFs (mean time between failures) aside, after 10 years, the components and magnetic coatings just won't be reliable.

Ten years old is pretty old in terms of hard drives. The drives are measured in terms of "mean time between failure" this is an hour rating. You have no idea how long that one has been run. There are also great advances in storage capacity since that drive came out and they are alot cheaper. I would get a new one.

It all depends on what you want to do with the computer. Like are you using it to just type letters, or are you using it for gaming. If you use it for something like letter writing then you can just use your old hard drive. Now if you are trying to use it for gaming then you either need to do some work on your current computer or just go out and buy a new one.

it depends how much storage you want i would think, i would presume your old hardrive is very small and will not store alot of files, however if you broguht a new one you could buy one that has a large memoray and it will also be quicker at performing operations such as saving data then the old harddrive

Just buy. The 10 year old is probably 10-20 gigs. HDs are so cheap nowadays

Yes if its a least 20 gigs if money is a problem. Your drive will be full in no time. New drives are under $100.

keep back-up of yr hard drive because it is real old and if it is enough for you follow golden rule
IF AIN'T BROKE DON'T FIX IT
later you buy it - you'll get newer technology, bigger storage and lower price so if that's enough storage for you just work with it - keep back-up up-to-date though - it is real old so don't be suprised when it fails
