Truth is the foundation stone of any friendship/relationship. Friendship cannot thrive if the essential component of truth is absent. You should not act on mere suspicions. You can simply ask him if he was telling the truth. In case you find that he was lying to you, I see no reason why you should continue your friendship with him.

I have a good friend who is always there when I need help , She is great, but tells SO MANY LIES . Over the years I have excepted her for who she is , After many years I have realised that she is very insecure , her mother made her feel like she was a no-body so she tells lies to make herself look important .
I know she lies and I except her and do not challenge her lies . This is who she is , she is not perfect but she is a good person.

If this person is telling lies that do not hurt other people then ignore it , BUT if the lies are hurting some one then speak up.

I would just ask if him if what he said was true. Even if he denighs it he will realize that he shouldn't lie to you. Maybe that will be enough to straighten his act up, if it's not, then limit your time with him. we shouldn't really waste time with people who are not returing our honesty. It's not healthy for us.
