hug or be "sentimental" with their family, specifically the family they grew up with (mostly their parents) yet they are fine being this way with their own family (spouse and children) and maybe they are a Bit (only a little bit) excessive with their family when it comes to hugs and being affectionate, in the case that they feel needy for it.

Intimacy issues may come from a lack of emotional intimacy in a family. There may have been some breach of trust. There may have been some emotional disconnect. The person may come from an emotionally abusive background. That may explain the need for approval.

Why are you looking for fault in the way your spouse was brought up. this could cause rifts between your in laws, he was theirs first, you cannot take away a person's family, he may be more affectionate when around them because he misses them, and when they are all together it is important to him and he gets sentimental so what, we all do as we get older because we realize, especially after one loses a sibling or parent that life is short and wished that time permitted more visits and so on.

I think as a child your spouse was loved and hugged and appreciated almost every day by those who loved him and still do.

Well, an overexcessive amount of affection (oddly enough) as a child can factor into it. Obviously gender has a lot to do with it as well, generalization: guys aren't suppose to be affectionate! Movies, music, friends, and society in general can and will affect children growing up in different ways.
