The ABS light comes on when the computer see a fault in the system. When the light is on , the ABS system is disabled, which doesn't affect the braking of the vehicle. Notice if the speedometer is operating normally and if it is, the most likely problem is the rear wheel speed sensor in the top of the differential. It is safe to drive like this, just remember that the ABS system doesn't work. Dont bother to turn the key off everytime the light comes on, just leave it on>

There's a fault in the anti-lock brakes. Your brakes will work normally, but the anti-lock feature may not work properly when needed. Get it checked out. The most likely cause of an intermittent fault like this would be a wheel speed sensor or its wiring. That's usually not too expensive or difficult to correct, but you do need to have a pro look at it.

check your brake fluid level and yes it's safe to drive if the light is on as when the light is on you just don't have the ABS brakes but you will have normal brakes, you might have a wheel sensor getting ready to go on one of your wheels.

Most the time you just need a new speed sensor on top the differential. Get the codes checked at ford.
