I've deleted files from the hard drive but I'm very worried about Internet content. I used this computer to shop online and to manage my finances. How can I safely remove all this content?

if you're promoting your pc, thoroughly sparkling your hard pressure. Deleting documents and reformatting isn't sufficient. Reformatting does no longer overwrite each and every sector, and private training can proceed to be retrievable. Use a threat-free delete or disk wiping application to overwrite each and every sector on all hard drives. be particular to apply a application that helps the U.S. DoD widely used of seven passes or wipes. at the same time as this technique is tremendous for most individuals, word that the purely absolute way of destroying all lines of each and everything your hard drives is to have those disks degaussed (demagnetized) and bodily destroyed. said: BCWipe, information Eliminator, or SDelete.

You need to get a dedicated hard disk cleaner. Nothing your other replies suggest will DEFINITELY clean it. I have Norton Systemworks WIPE INFO that will clean everything up to government security standards.

What can happen by just reinstalling the OS, is that it may not overwrite the data you say is vulnerable. Even if it does overwrite, your data could be retrieved by a dedicated hacker. So please use a disk wiper dedicated to that purpose.

Once you've done that, I'd suggest a hammer provided you wear safety goggles.

If you really want the drive clean get dban

http://dban.sourceforge.net/

Install it on a cdrom or a floppy and let it wipe the drive for
6 or 8 hours so nobody will be able to use a recovery
program on the drive to get anything you don't want them to
see.

you will have to put the windows CD into your system and let it reformat the system before it installs the same operating system. that will clean it... or just go get a hardrive wiping program but that's over kill...
