My first cousin named her daughter Maykayla which is a beautiful name, but if I name my daughter Myla is it too close to her child's name?? I asked my cousin about it and she doesn't seem to mind, I guess I am just worried what other people will think of it. My husband doesn't come up with girls names that easily and he is really stuck on Myla, what should I do?

I suppose it would depend on the pronunciation. Had her daughter been named Michaela, Myla might seem a bit too similar (since both are generally considered feminine forms of Michael and Myles, and Myles is a pet form of Michael ... so in essence, all forms of the same name LOL).

It seems she hasn't simply gone with a misspelling of Michaela, however, but a completely different pronunciation as well, since "Maykayla" clearly indicates it be said MAY-kay-la (the beginning like the word or month of the same spelling, obviously LOL). In that case, the only similarity would be the M beginnings and A endings of each, but they wouldn't sound overly alike in general.

Just a judgement call, I suppose. If it might bothers you, perhaps a similar name would appeal? Lila(h), Nila, Neila, Nola, Nora, Lola, Emilia (nickname Mila works, too), etc. ;)

I love how Myla sounds out loud, but I like the spelling Mila better - it's a bit more elegant looking. I think it's supposed to be the feminization of Milo, but I'm not sure. Anyway, Maykayla and Mila really aren't that similar, and I'm sure most people won't know what your cousin's daughter's name is anyway when they see Mila lol.

Good luck and congrats!

IT IS A BEAUTIFUL NAME!!! I did have the same problem. My sister has 4 kids, 3 of those names are Bailey, Kaleb and Madisen.
I am 8 months pregnant with BABY #2 and my first daughter we named Brenna, this one is Kadyn and if we have a third we will name her Mackinzee. I dont believe it matters at all. I love the names I choose and they are my children . My sister never even noticed. When I did tell her the thought it was cute. Besides them starting with the same letter I dont think Myla and Maykayla are anything alike. Good luck and congrats.

No they are not too close at all!

Myla is adorable and short and sweet and unique! It's great. It doesn't sound like Maykayla at all. It has similar sounds, but they are not the same at all!

I think it's beautiful.

I agree with most everyone else...Myla and Maykayla are not that similar, so I say go for it if you like the name. Similar sounding alternatives might be Maya, Lila, or Lyla.
