I was thinking I might be anemic again, so I bought a high potency b-vitamin/iron liquid supplement. I found that 20 minutes or so after I take it, I am sleepy. I took it for 3 days and it does the same thing everytime. I thought if anything vitamins make you alert and ready for the day. Any info would be appreciated. Thank you.

Two things

Firstly you should consult a doctor if you suspect that you're anemic. Anemia in itself is usually a symptom of something else so I would make an appointment as soon as possible.

Secondly read the instructions on the bottle. Drowsiness is often a side effect of many medical preparations and if so it will be clearly stated and also advise you not to drive or operate machinery.

Hope it's nothing serious. Best wishes.

Hi EJ, Iron is one of those supplements that you shouldn't just take on a whim.

Get a blood test and see if you are low in iron then only if you are, take the iron supplement and get rechecked in about 3 months.

You dont' want to take more iron than you need, taking too much iron is worse for your health than being slightly low on iron.

Perhaps your body is challenged trying to digest the iron, this could result in you feeling sleepy after taking it.

Low iron usually makes you sleepy and B vitamins typically give you energy. You should not take iron without consulting a doctor because too much iron can be bad for you. Stop taking the iron and consult your physician.

The body has the capacity to change blood flow for the purpose of specific activities. For example, when you eat a large meal, blood flow is diverted to your digestive system...which makes you sleepy. When you get a flu shot, your blood flow is diverted to the organs that manufacture extra antibodies...which makes you sleepy.

So in the realm of possibilities, your body may be responding to your nutritional input appropriately. Because you're taking iron and B together, you're supporting blood production which is going to require raw materials and energy...which can make you sleepy.

you need to be carefull here, i would suggest a blood test by a doctor to check your thyroid. my wife had similar symptoms and ended up finding out she had an underactive thyroid.
with the thyroxin drug you also have to be carefull of avoiding certain foods specially sea weed based.
