There are a lot of rules, but most apply to more advanced math. In terms of the types of math most people run into, the rules that cause the most confusion apply to the order of operation:
If something is in brackets, do it first. For example,
2 x (4+6) = 2 x 10 = 20.
If there are no brackets, multiplication and addition are done before addition and subtraction. For example,
2 x 4 + 3 x 5 = 8 + 15 = 23.
If you are taking a square root, whatever is inside the square root sign is done first. Treat it the same as brackets.
If you need more information, please let us know what types of rules you are asking about.
