Mine has been doing this, and I realized that the drain is clogged. Both the sink and garbage disposal drain through the same drain. I was able to unclog it by plugging up the disposal and using the toilet plunger on the sink side (and I sanitized everything afterwards, because Ewwwwww).
I also realized that there are many things that should not go down the disposal - I always thought that anything could go down. But apparently not. No peelings, rice, or tough, bulky foods.

It sounds like there is a blockage in the drain beyond the garbage disposal unit. I would get some liquid Plumber or some sort of clog-busting chemical and pour it down the drain.
If you are unable to resolve the problem with a chemical or with a plunger, then you'll probably need to call a plumber to fix the clogged pipe.

Your clog is further down the line than the sink drain. The disposal is forcing water up the standpipes, and it drains back down when you turn it off. It's probably going to take a plumber to get the blockage.

sounds like you have a clog down the line
Main Line Cleaner at WalMart is about $10/gallon
works overnight - stuff is worth it's weight in gold
check to make sure you can use it on a disposal - 'or maybe put it in the other side of the sink - - - -
all the best (used it in 3 diff houses) and one was an outside gutter drain!

The drain is clogged and the disposal is just pumping water out the vent piping. Snake out the drain.

Call a plumber. Sounds like there is a blockage somewhere. Take care of it now before it gets worse.
