Because we are young and want to have fun with people in our high school environment and it is much easier to do so if you are popular. A lot of us don't see that in just a short time it will mean nothing to us when we are in the real world, but I don't regret getting everyone to be my friend and just having fun. High school is only once in your life and your still young, it's better to enjoy it.

Sometimes it's a lot harder to be part of the outcasts, even though they usually out number the popular kids, they are rarely treated as the majority. Kids can be really cruel, and in some high schools you don't have a choice, either you are popular or a loser.
However I don't find that real life gets better in that aspect (maybe it's because I live in a small town) but I find real life to be like high school x10 :(

Well, it's an age of immaturity and insecurity. A lot of teenagers feel a need to be part of a certain group to make themselves feel better, because they're not actually comfortable in their own skin. And since the majority of kids feel this way, it becomes the natural order in middle and high schools. Everyone wants to be liked, of course. But until you realize that you are fine the way you are, and you can be successful without the recognition of other's who seem to be "better than you", then you will get out of that mindset. It seems like a simple answer to the problem, but it's not. You have to really feel comfortable with yourself, not just convince yourself that you are, and that often only comes with maturity. It may be a difficult age to be in, but it teaches you a lot, and you can use it as a learning experience.

Because it is easier to go along with the crowd. If you think about it, most kids just want to fit in. They want friends and so they go along with the popular choice. I always tell my children to just be kind and things will fall into place but don't ever let anyone walk on you or anyone else. In our town, the middle school is the most cliquey place. By the time the kids get to high school, they begin respecting each others differences and seem to get along.

Everyone is desperate to be in with the 'it' crowd/ Even if you don't particulary like them.
I suppose it's because it's natural to want to be liked by alot of people and you get more power which can make you feel good.
But there are alot of negatives to being popular.
For eg: being someone you're not, doing things you wouldn't normally do, but you go ahead anyway to be 'cool' etc etc

It makes them feel special and like they belong to something special. It is an ego thing. For teens it is a matter of finding ones identity and being part of a group helps.

Because they don't know or want to hear anything about the real world. In the real world, nobody cares if your popular, because they will still step all over you to get what they want.

People think being popular is important because they think life will be easier that way but reality is that being unpopular is better because that way you can focus on more important things like your studies

Because they haven't yet learned that it will only bring them a false sense of confidence. Once your out of school the real world doesn't know or care who you are.
