I think it might be infringing copyright acts or something? Are there any exceptions like for personal use, not pirating?

What you do in your own home is pretty much not illegal, unless you are running a Meth lab. However i have a question, if this "hard drive" is in your computer, and your computer is hooked up to the internet. And you participate in a file sharing scheme, then that is "distribution of copywrited material". So, making a back up file is no problem as long as your files are not network accessible to other computers, either at a business or by internet. So there is no loophole here for you to participate in file sharing by claiming to just having a "back up" file for personal needs when in fact it is being shared and distributed to other people. Be careful what you put on your computer drives!!!

It isn't illegal to put them on your pc or make a back up disc provided that 1) you own a copy of the dvd...an official copy that is. 2) you don't publish the copy in anyway...don't give bootlegs to friends, don't fileshare them on the internet, etc.

Let me understand, you want to back up a robust physical media to something with 1,000,000 times the failure rate?
