I would think that it is the valve stem seals causing the blue smoke and a leaking valve cover causing the oil burnning smell. Diesel fuels do burn at a higher temp than gas so it gives an engine more torque and it needs good heat compression in the combustion chamber so to begin with, I would try changing the fuel filter as a check and see about some type of injector cleaner and then I would do the valve seals and replace the gaskets. Good Luck!

I'm not too familiar with diesel engines but I do know when you see blue smoke from a gas engine you have oil leaking into the cylinder chamber and it burns off with the gas giving you blue smoke out your exhaust. It's usually seen in older cars where the rings which seal off the top of the pistons have started to leak and allow oil to flow around them. Hope this gives you a possible answer. I would pose the question to your mechanic.

Couple of things to check, first you need to find out if you see smoke ,WHEN YOU ACCELERATE if so ,its your piston rings /worn cylinders. If no smoke is detected when you accelerate, and you do see smoke when you decelerate, its the valve guides and or seals. The latter is definitely cheaper to have repaired. You did not mention the mileage of the car and if it was reasonably maintained. Also if you smelled burned oil inside the car ,it sounds like an external oil leak which is touching the exhaust manifold or exhaust system. Good Luck and hope i answered your question!

The blue smoke indicates worn cylinder rings.
If YOU can smell it in the passenger compartment perhaps oil is also leaking from a valve cover onto an exhaust manifold or something.

In a gasoline engine blue smoke has always been the burning of oil maybe its very small amount right now that you dont notice between oil changes , but then again diesel is a form of oil so maybe your engine isnt burning it properly

Some diesal gasoline burns blue. I often wondered if it had to do with some of the additives. Also if there has been any oil spilt when it is changed the heat vent will bring the smell of its burning into the passenger compartment.

1- pop the hood and look for signs of oil - I would suspect the valve cover gasket leaking on the header.
2- compression/leakdown test - that will tell you if the rings are bad
3- when was the last time the oil was chenged?
