Fidel lead a revolution against a murderous and corrupt Batista.

He was seen as a Communist by American leaders and when he nationalized many businesses...& kicked out corrupt American Mafiosos... We [USA] reacted by embargoing / isolating Cuba.

The Cuban leadership had a vision of revolutionizing Latin America... Che Guevara was assasinated in that effort. and there was a period when Cuba exported military assistance to revolutionary groups around the world. That policy eventually changed and in recent years Cuba has exported more Doctors to third world countries in their attempt to influence International Policies.

American attempts to assassinate him and the Bay of Pigs invasion have colored his perception and created a framework for his paranoia.

Fidel has been a mixed blessing to the Cuban people... but my opinion is that the average Cuban still sees a net benefit from Fidels leadership.
