I've played for 3 and a bit years now with half an hour lesssons for wait for it... £13 as well lol
It should have been £15 but my brother had them with him as well so he gave it a bit cheaper. I would say it probably was steep but if you can afford it then go for it. I had an excellent teacher and although I can't say how good this teacher will be, for £13 they have to be good! =D
Good luck.

The price does seem steep, but it unfortunately seems to be the going rate. I taught myself to play guitar, but after a few years I became frustrated by lack of further progress and so looked at taking lessons. The 1-on1 guitar lessons appealed to me but were too expensive, so instead, I opted for council run group classes which were much much cheaper.

Whilst it was great to chat and play with other budding guitarists, I felt that I didn't really learn that much because though we all classed ourselves as intermediate level players, we all had different expertise, meaning that teaching us as one group was very difficult. I think the 1-on-1 lessons would be infinitely more beneficial.

It is possible to learn on your own, and many people do, with the help of books/Cd's and Internet tutorials, but I would seriously consider taking at least a couple of lessons to see how you feel about them. Perhaps you could talk to your music department at school to see if they offer lessons or could recommend a tutor to you?

If you decide to go ahead, shop around. There might be discounts for students etc with certain tutors/shops....

Truthfully, there should be someone out there that you can get with that would be willing to show you stuff for free. I mean if you enjoy it that much, and someone else enjoys it that much, then it is worth it to teach/learn for free. What I did, I purchased a book of basic chords etc...figured that part out for my self. Then I hung around a lot of different (really good) players and watched/listened to what they were doing, I'd go home and imitate, or make it sound similar. Hang out with the right people, you won't have to pay and most times, people are happy to show you what they know, little tricks. It is good to add what other people do to what you know or learn but always remember to be you, don't try to be someone else especially if you really like an artists style. You can use it, but change it or manipulate the chords/notes so that it is all YOU. That is the best. But if worse comes to worse, you can pay for lessions, weather you think it's steep or not depends on how bad you want to learn. And remember also, you are going to learn the instructors style/techniques. That is only one source and I think it is better to learn a lot of different sources and techniques and make your own or how you are comfortable with the music you make! Good luck to you!

It used to be £5 for a one hour lesson when i started playing the guitar. Mind you, that was back in 1989.

From what i've read, £12 - £13 is the average price for half hour lessons, £20 for the full hour.

Where do you live?

http://www.gumtree.com/

If you live in London, you wanna go the tution bit and the bottom right

Though if you don't live in London on far right you can change your location, to most of UK cities,

Mind you some cities may not have many ads,

Good luck, and the going rate is bout £20 for a 1 hour lesson, well in London it is,,, hmm rip off? Yes, but they all roughly charge the same, so would be hard to find the cheapest

Good Luck, and Have fun!

In my opinion if you get a good teacher its worth it. If you want to make the most of your money you could try teaching yourself as well as taking lessons.

The students that I've had that have done self-study as a supplement to lessons have progressed a lot faster.

Here's a source for free lessons:
