Go to the iTunes store and look at the most popular songs right now. You could easily make a list of 25 songs just by picking out the ones in the genres you like...

You haven't really given us much to go on - for example your audience. There's always the great standbys like the Beatles, Stones etc.
Go see some live music by bands playing the sort of covers you like. Copy their playlist and gradually replace their songs with some you would like.
I also suggest you go to chordie.com and look at your favourite artists. Not only will you get the chords, but will get an idea for a playlist.

It depends on the era that you grew up in, really. And some ppl like certain songs because they bring back memories for them.
You can always do a search on say, "80's music". I pick my songs by favorite groups. But I have a wide range of music interests, and many people don't.
