Do all solid body electric guitars basically perform the same (disregarding any subtle nuances due to wood)?

Is a whammy necessary? Do you prefer one or not? Is it perhaps something an advanced guitarist uses?

Well... it really does depend on the make, like gibsons are higher quality where as the cheap $99 guitars arent as great, however the amp is also a factor. I personally have never had a whammy, but one of my friends loves his and another took his off because it through off his tuning. so its really just a personal prefrence.
