Several ancient civilizations had the myth of Atlantis, All agreed that Atlantis was destroyed by earthquakes. Herodotus in the Histories states that the Atlantic Ocean was originally the name of the Indian Ocean. Tradition says Atlantis was named for Atlas and so was the Atlantic Ocean. Another Historian, Plato, said Atlantis was around Gibraltar, opening to the ocean. The problem is the Historians are interpreting the stories of Atlantis from Egyptian lore. Some Historians of the Ancient World dismissed Atlantis as legend. So if you believe Plato and Herodotus, Atlantis would have been located near Gibraltar, around the ancient pillars of Atlas.
