I don't know what you're putting on your nails, when you say chemicals it doesn't sound like a manicure, more like acrylics. BUT as for the manicure and (especially) the pedicure, getting a pedicure at least once a week in the last trimester of pregnancy did a LOT for the comfort of my legs and feet, as well as my stress level (I go to a pedicurist who is also certified in reflexology- I'd suggest you do, too), And it was nice to know my toes looked pretty, even if I couldn't see them. I also go to a spa which uses a lot of organics, has no smell inside, and is well ventilated. It's worth the few extra dollars at any time, especially whe you're pregnant. At least be sure it's well ventilated and has strict sanitation standards. If not a spa, at least use a reputable salon. All those little nail places in every strip mall tend to be small and poorly ventilated as well as not quite as up to date on the sanitation standards.
Put your feet up, relax. :)

It's safe. You'll only be in a short while.

Some people are concerned with the manipulation of ankles during a pedicure being a pressure point for the induction of labor, and others are concerned with the spread of bacteria that occurs during a mani/pedi. Be sure the place you are going is clean. They should be using rubber gloves and cleaned tools.

I don't think the fumes are a big deal. Actually probably the biggest problem is possible infections you could get from certain saloons (this is true for everyone, not just pregnant women). So make sure wherever you go, they are washing their hand frequently. Look around are they disinfecting everything between customers etc

Have fun, but be safe

I might wait til the first 12 weeks is over....the most important development time. Then make sure you use the little fans that they have on the desks, but seldom use OR use a mask too....they buy them in bulk. I'd still get my nails done. All those nail techs have kids and they all look to be normal.

Manicures and pedicures are OK, because nail lacquer is not absorbed into the nail bed. The fumes can make you nauseous, though. So be careful.

I wouldn't go to a shop and get one but have a girlfriend come over and you two can do them for each other...you can buy the materials you need at your local wal-mart and it will save you exposure to the chemicals found in a nail shop.

Of course I have seen pregnant women who are nail technicians and I have never heard of any defects so perhaps if you don a mask you'd be okay....ask your doctor he/she could give the best answer.

My doctor told me I could have both done as long as it's in a well ventilated area. He did also tell me to be on the safe side and request that they use NEW files and tools (just to be safe!), and to not have my toenails cut too short, and straight across. They were more than happy to accommodate. Or so they acted like they were. lol
But every doctor has difference of opinions.

Go for it… I still go myself, I just don’t get my nails done right now (family was giving me to much crap saying it’s not healthy and so instead I just stopped getting them so I wouldn’t keep hearing them) but I still get my pedicure... I just go in the mornings when they just open so I don’t have to wait and small all the nail polish.
