Magnesium Oxide, except that it isn't a gas but a solid. Since no gas is given off there is no flame as such, but the burning metal (and surrounding air) glows white hot at a temperature of about 2,800C

The product of burning Mg may well be MgO - however this will be a slid at RT!!! Is a gas really given off in the true sense of emission of gas?
