Yes it was a real shark, it was called a megalodon. Was a little over 50 feet long and weighed just over 50 tons.
Their best guess is that it went extinct around 2 million years ago.
You can often find their teeth on sale on ebay or in shell/shark teeth shops.

it is a shark; well, it was. it became extinct about 1,6 milion years ago&it is considered to have been the largest predatory fish that ever inhabited earth;it is a distant cousin of the great white shark.

was real .fossil teeth are quite common on some strata.
