When Fidel Castro first begin to fight, in the late fifties and early sixties, against Cuban dictator named Batista; and won, he was supported by the United States. A short time later, Castro's Cuba and the United States had a falling out for some reason I can't recall. Castro then made friends with communist Russia and Premier Khreushev which was thus closely followed by the Cuban Missile crises. After that the United States considered Fidel Castro an enemy.
Thanks

My apologies on behalf of the legions of morons who can't seem to read your original question, and assume that anyone who actually answered it was in fact advocating for Castro. Have we lost all ability to think critically? The question concerned the positive things about Castro. We all know the negatives because they are pounded into our heads on a daily basis. Is it suddenly illegal to engage in any sort of intellectual thought about something? Because if it is, that sounds a lot to me like one of the big negative things about Castro (i.e., lack of freedom of speech). Demagoguery works both ways, people, and it's dangerous no matter who uses it.

To answer your question, the big three would be: (1) health care (2) education and literacy and (3) ousting a dictator who helped keep money in the hands of the few while screwing the masses. Since you didn't ask about the negatives, I won't go into it.

An interesting project! I'm sure you're going to get loads of people completely ignoring what you said and telling you all the bad stuff, so here's some good things - at least from one perspective.

Castro overthrew a corrupt regime run by General Fulgencio Batista, essentially a military dictatorship. While the government Castro replaced it with didn't prove to be a million times better it nonetheless did something for the Cuban people, namely;

Nationalising healthcare and other aspects of Cuban life, so that they could be used by all for free.

Took Cuban land back from foreign hands (one estimate was 75%, mostly belonging to US citizens) and back into the hands of Cuban people.

Reduced the gap between rich and poor which had been growing for some years.
Increasing literacy and living standards

Today Cuba has one of the highest literacy rates in latin America (99.8% https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/cu.html), and some of the highest achieving students http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education_in_Cuba

Cuba also has the second highest doctor/patient ratio in the world (after Italy) and Cuba sends many doctors overseas to work in other 3rd world countries. Cuba also has high rates of 'health tourism' - people visiting Cuba to get healthcare; including people from Europe, Canada and the US.

It is interesting that your teacher is asking you to do something OBJECTIVELY and to decide for yourself whether the benefits Castro has brought outweigh the bad things he's done (which are pretty numerous) - instead of indoctrinating you and saying "Castro is evil; if you like him you're evil"

Okay:
1) He kicked out all the Mafia gangs that were running casinos on the island up until the late 1950's.
2) He has raised the standards of education so Cuba has the highest literacy rate in the Carribean
3) Some of the best healthcare in the Americas, which is free to the people

well you see Fidel Castro liberated Cuba from the oppression of the Batista's and ended basically colonial rule in Cuba by the US. he's given his people the best health care in the hemisphere, not to mention a wonderful higher education system. he's managed to make communism work in a progressively capitalistic world and the people of Cuba love him for it. he's seen within his country as a folk hero, like our Davey Crocket. yes, well the whole Cuban Missle Crisis is kind of a pockmark in the history of Cuba but really the Soviets basically told Castro they were putting missile silos on his land. what could he say really? the soviets had a habit of trying to rule every communist country from Moscow so you can't even really say that was his fault. you see the reason we as Americans are supposed to hate Fidel is because he violates the Monroe Doctrine which basically says we have the right to intervene in the domestic dealings of any country in the western hemisphere. if anything we should be ashamed of our bully like stance towards the rest of our latin neighbors. In short Fidel has held that country together and managed to fend off the US at every turn. He's an amazing man.

Fidel sounds like a advantageous fella. yet his stand on communism is merely hurting the cuban financial device and the cuban human beings. i don't comprehend his way of thinking. Communism is lifeless.

he united the working people of Cuba in overthrowing the corrupt american puppet Batista. He is the worlds longest serving leader and his people love him. Cuba has one of the best free healthcare systems in the world and some of the highest literacy rates.

Castro is NOT a bad person unless you are an american who wanted to exploit cuba for all its worth at the time of the revoloution

I hope this isn't for a school project. The man is a butcher and murderer. What in the hell is to be admired in that???!!!
He doesn't care about human rights at all!
Why do you think people kill themselves trying to get out of Cuba? It is because he has seriously MESSED IT UP!
Your teacher should be fired for making such an assignment!
