St. John had been exiled to the Island of Patmos at a time when the Christians were being persecuted by the Roman Emperors who were demanding that they be worshiped as God. He wrote it to encourage Christians to remain faithful even though what lay ahead were very hard times. Many of his visions that were recorded sound bizarre, they are looked upon as apocalyptic text as he left many clues to indicate how to interpret them.

I think that Saint John the son of a fisherman was really illiterate and would have dictated any word to a scribe. Thus we will never know if John the fisherman would have written anything as nothing of the original written letters or any scrolls have survived to this day.

It is believed that the word of Saint John was recorded long after his death. Albeit if that is the case then it could have been fabricated. Again who really knows the truth and only God would know and God hasn't let me know any differences as yet.

Well, since everybody stole my "pen and paper" answer....
:-))

God gave him visions while he was sleeping, with the instructions that he take parchment and quill and write down everything (with one exception) that he saw. Presumably, then, he wrote it while sleeping.
