any ideas how to increase the volume of playback

have gone to volume control and turned it to full but still not very louds

I also have an aspire and the volume is not as goo as in other computers, but you should try going to the tray bar right click on the speaker icon and go to volume mixer then put all the scales to the top, that may help.

Right click on the speaker icon in your tray. Down by the clock, and there you will see the option to open Volume Control

they are generally rubbish speakers...i tend to use headphones.
