at our Sheriff's Office in Central Florida
we only hire 10% of the applicants

yep - it's hard - but the cream rises to the top

and we are a 7 star accreditied agency
(I think the only one in the nation)
we were one of the only 3 six starred agencies

all the best!

Here in Ontario, the process to becoming a police officer is the same no matter where you plan on working. As far as being a police officer....

It isn't harder to be a police officer in a small town, it is just different. The way you police has to be different for certain aspects of the job, because you will see the same people you deal with at work at grocery store, post office, arena etc.. Your kids will also go to the same school as theirs.

The smaller departments have fewer openings to compete for so yes it is harder to get on small town departments. Also a lot of small towns will require that you already be a certified officer before you are hired.

Small towns look for trained officers to avoid having to send them to the police academy if possible. Small town departments also pay less than most larger departments and the officers they hire, generally, are often marginally competent. They have usually been fired from a larger department or could not qualify educationally, mentally, or emotionally for the larger departments, or are ready to retire.

c. I guess. it depends on the times. I have seen it where one person tested for 2 openings, and I have seen it where 20 put in for 1 opening. all in the same town. when jobs are plentiful, it is 1 person applying, and when jobs get scarce, 20 put in. it is a good paying job with benefits so a lot of people put in who have absolutely no shot of getting hired.

either way you should have to go to an academy so you can be certified.
