This is a really tough question because chemical engineers work in such vast range of areas, whether that’s food and drink, water, sustainable energy etc. You will find chemical engineers looking for ways to better manufacture our favourite chocolate bars, you will find chemical engineers working on Formula One racing cars. I’d suggest you visit http://www.whynotchemeng.com for a better idea of the roles on offer.

A guide highlighting the current challenges facing both society and chemical engineers has been published this year by IChemE (Institution of Chemical Engineers). IChemE is a global membership body for chemical engineers.

Entitled ‘A Roadmap for 21st Century Chemical Engineering’, the document can be downloaded for free at http://www.icheme.org/roadmap2007.pdf and will tell you more about these challenges as well as the short, medium and long-term solutions . They are a multi-disciplinary (indisciplined?) lot. You will find them everywhere. They are the workhorses (other engineers call them donkeys) of industry.

I am one too.
