Why is it recommended to store fresh batteries in the freezer to extend thier life; BUT
Batteries in cars, or in flashlights in cars, in freezing weather; drain and die?

The cooler, the longer the battery retains its charge. However they do not perform well while still cold. If you took the cold car battery and flashlight into a warm place they would perform better after warming overnight.

Who recomends that? You're supposed to store batteries in a cool dry place. THE FREEZER? Extreme temps suck the life out of your batteries. Don't do it.

people put batteries in the fridge, I think its because the temperature stay constant and temperature changes can drain a battery.
