here is a link lets get this petition signed and force congress to hand over complete control of tobacco to the FDA. It will make everyone happy, no more second hand smoke and no more bogus tax increases on tobacco users. I am a smoker and support this 100%, the government is trying justify another increase with children healthcare. If they get there way another .39 cents a pack. I think enough is enough and why do they continue to allow this poison to be sold to citizens. It is a big game and I have emailed multiple news groups, cancer society and have received no responses because they are just as bad as the government, fear of losing tax payers dollars for tobacco. This is big business and as a smoker you should be pissed that they are taking advantage of us. Lets stand together and rid the US of this poison.

Here we go, the winners are coming out. I personally find nothing funny about this issue. I also love how you get the people who hate and can't stand smokers but yet they believe that tobacco should be sold. Is it, they are afraid tax hikes would now equally come out of their pockets instead of just smokers?I have read some topics on tobacco and of course we all know taxes are the reason why people believe tobacco use will never end. So lets keep punishing smokers for something they buy legally in the store. I have also read that people think tobacco would become a hot black market item. I guess if you want to live like that, so be it. I am a smoker and would never buy them on the black market and I think people would find that it is not worth it to smoke anymore. If you want to smoke that bad then at least the government isn't helping you kill yourself. It of course is a big issue and in my opinion can be over if everyone would just stand up and fight for what they truly believe in. .

Okay,
every time a cigarette is inhaled it is poison, not good, never is. Food on the other hand is something we need to survive and if eaten in moderation it is fine. However when people are lazy and just eat, what happens the fat begins to build up. It is two different discussions and we do need tobacco to survive, tobacco is something we have never needed except the government needs it for a profit game. There are a lot of kick backs given to politicians from cigarette makers that no one will ever know about, just to shut up and stay away from the discussion. I eat fast food everyday and let me tell you 36 years old athletic build and I don't work out at all. I do however work hard at my job. Whatever the tax hike may be really does not matter all that matters is they are beating up on smokers again. I think maybe they should tax fast food establishments instead, everyone needs to blame someone but what it comes down to is that they don't serve you poison at restaurants.

The proposed tax is $.61 per pack. The purported reason is for childrens health care. If you have ever been involved in this program, you probably know it will be helping people who just don't want to pay for their kids insurance. Been there, done that. I found it funny that the workplace no-smoking laws have been in effect for some time now and yet, Congress "just" made it illegal in their building this week. This healthcare plan will be law, even if cigarettes are made illegal. It will be supported by a tax on something, even if cigarettes are banned. Watch out McDonalds and Burger King because you are the next target since you cause obesity in kids. Ooops, I forgot that you can't tell kids they are obese because it hurts their feelings.

The problem with banning smoking is that you are giving up a little bit of your freedom. You say to nonsmokers, do they want the tax shared out too? Well, no...they don't buy cigarettes. You don't HAVE to either...it is really one of the fairest types of tax if you think about it that way...you only have to pay it if you choose to.

We can't continue to let the government ban things "for our own good" Next thing you know, they are telling us what kind of foods we can eat, clothes we should wear (sometimes its cold...someone should FORCE us to wear coats!), activites we are allowed to do (somethings are dangerous, we should FORCE people to do something safer), etc etc.

Frankly, I think smoking is gross. It is bad for you, it stinks, it's expensive, and real hassle to have to deal with. But the idea of allowing the government to come in and tell us how we are to live our lives is so abhorant to me that I will defend.

I'm a smoker who thinks that it should be banned, your right it is poison and its a fact that they add ingredients that make tobacco more addictive, imagine what would happen if other companies or industries added chemicals too make there products addictive or more addictive?ie dunkin dounuts,McDonalds etc.it will never be banned because of the money the government makes on the taxes.

Nope. For the simple reason that we are already losing too many rights in this country. Anything that gets banned is a magnet for crime. We already have an overwhelming drug problem,we don't need tobacco to be added to the list of substances that people lose their lives over. The government is too involved in our personal lives already.

No, thank you.

I don't smoke and never have. Absolutely hate the smell of it on other people. I have a family member who is dying of emphysema as a result of a lifetime of smoking. In spite of all this I firmly believe the government has no business preventing people from doing foolish and even self-destructive things as long as they know what they're getting into.

You don't get it, do you? The issue is freedom to choose, even if the choice you make is bad for you. We don't need a nanny state constantly looking over our shoulder.
