ROM stands for Read Only Memory, its a non-volatile storage medium which means it can store data on it without requiring continuous power.

RAM stands for Random Access Memory, opposite to ROM this is volatile, which means when the power supply is cut off all data stored on it will be lost.

Rom is "Read only memory" and Ram is "Random access memory"

The difference is that the Rom can only be cleared if you flash it, where the Ram is cleared every time you shut off your computer.

Read Only Memory - does just that - looks at the data and displays to your screen

Random Access Memory is used by your computer -
like your dining room table

your hard drive = your file cabinet
your cache = the pipeline to get your files from cabinet to table

the more RAM (my first computer had 1 meg and 40 meg hard drive 316SX16)
the more you can put on your dining room table at one time

this computer has 250 gig of hard drive and 2 gig of RAM

my FFXI game loads faster and plays smoother

with RAM - the more the merrier

all the best
